Stop the Scroll of Doom: How Game Design Turns Overwhelming Power Apps into Clear, Motivating Missions

Most internal apps don't fail with a bang. They fail with a sigh. The 'Scroll of Doom' is a real design problem — and game design has been solving it for decades. Here's how to bring that thinking into Power Apps without a single point or badge.

Because "usable" is not the same as "people want to use it."

Most internal apps don't fail with a big bang. They fail with a sigh.

You know the moment. Someone opens the app, sees a giant screen, scrolls a bit, scrolls again, scrolls more, loses the thread, and thinks: I'll do it later. Later becomes tomorrow. Tomorrow becomes never. And suddenly the app that technically works becomes the app nobody trusts, nobody likes, and nobody recommends.

The problem is rarely the business logic. The problem is the experience.

A classic Power Apps trap is what I call the Scroll of Doom — one screen packed with everything. A form that feels like a contract. Fields stacked like a wall. Sections that look similar. No obvious starting point. No feeling of progress. No moment that says: you're doing great, keep going.

And here's the important thing to say clearly: building a long form is not a mistake. Many processes are complex for real reasons — compliance, auditability, data quality, approvals, handovers. The complexity is often legitimate.

What's not legitimate is forcing the user to mentally carry the entire complexity at once.

This is where games are surprisingly relevant, even for serious business apps. Games have always dealt with complexity. They teach, guide, pace, and reduce overwhelm — without dumbing things down. They keep people moving forward, not because they're manipulated, but because the experience respects the human brain.

When a user faces a single long screen, they're not thinking "wow, this is complex." They're feeling uncertainty. Uncertainty creates hesitation. Hesitation creates abandonment. The real goal is not to make a business app fun like a toy. The goal is to make it feel navigable, safe, and finishable.

The Psychology Behind the Game Pattern

Games rarely present a player with "everything." They present a player with "the next thing." That seems simple — but it's one of the most powerful engagement mechanics we can borrow.

Cognitive load and the cost of scanning

A long form forces constant scanning. The user has to ask themselves repeatedly: Where am I? What's important? What do I skip? What happens if I miss something?

That's cognitive load — not just mental effort, but mental noise. And noise feels like stress.

Games reduce cognitive load by structuring information into layers. You don't see the whole world map, every quest, every inventory item, and every skill tree at the same time. You see what you need for the current moment. The rest exists — but it doesn't scream at you.

In business apps, we often do the opposite. We show everything to be "transparent," but transparency becomes overload. Chunking solves this — not by hiding information, but by sequencing it.

The Zeigarnik effect and unfinished tasks

There's a classic psychological concept: unfinished tasks linger in the mind more than finished ones. This can be good or bad.

A long form creates one massive unfinished task. It feels heavy. People avoid it.

Games break a big task into smaller completions. Each completion creates closure, and closure creates momentum. You don't need to finish the whole game today. You just need to finish the mission.

This is why missions work. They turn a heavy task into a series of light tasks — each one offering a small sense of completion. In a Power App, this translates into steps that can be saved, completed, and resumed. The user feels progress, not pressure.

Progress visibility and the power of "I'm getting somewhere"

One of the simplest truths in game UX: progress that is visible becomes motivating.

When progress is invisible, effort feels endless. When progress is visible, effort feels purposeful.

Games constantly show you where you are — chapters, missions, checkpoints, objective lists, progress bars, map markers. This is not decoration. It's reassurance.

Most business forms don't reassure. They demand. So the pattern is to bring progress visibility into serious apps without making it childish. "Step 2 of 4" is not childish. It's kind.

Decision fatigue and the next best action

When users face too much at once, they make more decisions than necessary. Should I fill this now? Do I need this field? What happens if I skip it? Which section matters most?

That's decision fatigue — the hidden cost that makes people feel stuck, even when they're perfectly capable. Games reduce decision fatigue by focusing the player: they make one thing feel like the right thing to do now. We can do the same with a mission overview and a clear next step.

How to Implement This in Power Apps

Here's a clean, realistic approach that works for internal apps like requests, onboarding, CRM updates, incident reports, or approvals.

1. Replace one mega screen with a Mission Overview

Create a first screen that answers three questions instantly:

  • What am I doing?
  • Where am I in the process?
  • What is the next step?

UI elements that work well: a simple progress indicator (Step 2 of 4), a list of missions as cards, and one primary button: Continue.

2. Break content into 3–5 mission screens

Instead of endless scrolling, create a short set of screens:

  • Mission 1: Basics
  • Mission 2: Details
  • Mission 3: Attachments
  • Mission 4: Review and submit

Each mission should be short enough to complete fast. Unknown length feels endless — known length feels finishable.

3. Track progress like a save game

Progress doesn't have to be complicated. Start simple: save the current step, mark completed missions, show what's next. When users return, the app picks up where they left off.

4. Add micro-feedback on completion

When a mission is completed, confirm it clearly:

  • Saved
  • Step completed
  • You are now on Mission 3

This is the moment that builds trust. Guided flow, visible progress, instant feedback — that's the whole recipe.

Common Objections, Answered Honestly

"But our process is complex. We need everything on one screen."

You might need everything in the process. You don't need everything at the same moment. Chunking doesn't remove complexity — it sequences it.

"Won't this slow users down?"

For experts, maybe slightly. For everyone else, it speeds them up by removing hesitation, errors, and rework. And nothing stops you from offering an "expert view" later. Games do this too — they offer shortcuts once mastery exists.

"Isn't this gamification?"

It's game-inspired UX, not points and badges. It's about guidance, pacing, and progress. Those are universal usability principles. Games just happen to execute them extremely well.

A Simple Challenge

If you build Power Apps, try this: open your most used screen and ask yourself — if I gave this to a new hire, would they feel confident in 30 seconds?

If the answer is no: build a mission overview, split the screen into three steps, add progress, add a save point.

You'll be shocked how quickly the app feels more professional — even though you didn't add any new features.

Because the biggest upgrade wasn't new functionality. It was a better journey.

No points. No badges. Just better UX.
