In games, the HUD is not decoration. It's a trust system.
A good HUD answers three questions, constantly:
- Where am I?
- What matters right now?
- What should I do next?
When those answers are visible, the brain relaxes. The user keeps moving. When they're missing, the brain goes into search mode. Search mode kills flow.
Here's the mechanics behind it.
Orientation reduces cognitive load
If users have to build their own mental map, they spend energy on navigation instead of the task itself. That is cognitive load — not in a theoretical way, in a real, practical way: more time, more mistakes, more drop-off.
Games reduce cognitive load with constant wayfinding signals: you are here, this is the goal, this is the next objective. Business apps often hide this behind generic headers and unclear screen names.
Uncertainty creates fear of wrong clicks
In a game, a wrong click is usually safe. In business apps, a wrong click can send an email, trigger a flow, update data, or annoy a colleague. Users know that. So they become careful.
Careful looks like slow. Slow looks like frustration. Then people avoid the app.
HUD thinking makes actions feel safer because the path is clear and predictable.
Consistency creates mastery
Games train muscle memory. The map is always in the same place. The objective list behaves the same way. The back action is consistent. This is why players feel competent fast.
Power Apps often break this by moving buttons around, changing screen patterns, or using different navigation logic across screens. When the app is consistent, users learn once — and then move faster.
How to Build HUD Navigation in Power Apps
HUD navigation is not a "big UX project." You can add it step by step, starting with your most confusing screen. Here's a practical pattern library you can use today.
1. Rename screens like goals, not objects
Many apps use screen titles like: Details, Edit, Form, Item. These words tell the user nothing.
Game mindset: name the goal.
- Create request
- Review details
- Submit and confirm
- Fix missing info
When the screen title tells the purpose, users stop guessing.
2. Add a breadcrumb that tells the story
Breadcrumbs are not just navigation — they're orientation.
Requests > Project Alpha > Review and submit
Even if users never click it, it acts like a mini-map. It builds confidence. It reduces the "how did I get here" panic.
3. Add a small "You Are Here" line
This is one of the cheapest upgrades with a big impact.
- You are here: Review
- Next: Submit
It looks simple, but it works because it removes uncertainty with one sentence.
4. Show progress for multi-step flows
If the journey has more than one screen, show progress. Step 2 of 4.
Unknown length feels endless. Known length feels finishable.
5. Make navigation predictable
Pick a navigation rule and stick to it.
- Back is always top left
- Primary action is always in the same place
- Secondary actions live in "More actions"
This creates a stable mental model. That's how users become fast.
6. Always show the next action
A HUD without an objective is just decoration. Add a clear next step:

You're building momentum on purpose.
The Before and After
Before: Generic titles. No breadcrumb. No progress. Buttons placed differently on different screens. Users can easily get lost.

When you see this side by side, you immediately feel the difference. The app stops feeling like screens. It starts feeling like a journey.
Common Pushback (and My Honest Answers)
"But our users are experienced. They don't need this."
Experienced users benefit most from consistency. HUD elements don't slow experts down — they reduce mistakes and speed up navigation. And not every user is an expert. Internal apps always have new hires, backups, occasional users.
"Breadcrumbs are old school."
Maybe. But they work. The goal isn't trendy UI. The goal is confidence and completion.
"Is this gamification?"
No points, no badges. This is game-inspired usability. Games are just very good at guiding people through complexity — and we'd be silly not to learn from that.
